The lack of diversity in the 2016 Oscar nominations has been no secret, and it’s pissed a load of people off.

After the large number of non-white winners at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, it left many questioning why the Academy Awards failed to nominate any whatsoever for a second year running.

So to combat the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons has decided to stage a rival awards show just days before the Oscars, aiming to showcase the diversity of Hollywood talent.

The All Def Movie awards will see Beasts of No Nation, Chi-Raq, Concussion, Creed, Dope and Straight Outta Compton compete for best picture.

Guests will arrive on a black carpet, and as well as handing out prizes for best actor, best actress, best director and ‘best bad muh fucka’ (surely that’s an automatic win for Samuel L Jackson?), there will be prizes for ‘best helpful white person’ and ‘best black survivor in a movie’.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Simmons said his awards were ‘not the Black Oscars, but they could be’.

This will be a fun, entertaining and hopefully thought-provoking celebration of the uncelebrated. I don’t expect a 90-year-old Academy member to see Straight Outta Compton or vote for it. I’m more concerned that in 2016 there continues to be a stunning lack of diversity in the studios, in the green-light process, in the decisions of what films and television series get made and what actors get chosen. This needs to be addressed institutionally.

Many actors and directors have already spoken out against the all-white lists of nominees, with Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and Tyrese Gibson boycotting this year’s Oscars.

The latest big name to weigh in on the diversity row is Steven Spielberg. He praised the likes of Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton, adding he was rather surprised by the exclusion of Idris Elba.

This clip pretty much sums up this years Oscars…
