The cast from the original Willy Wonka film, the good Willy Wonka film, have reunited 44 years on from when the movie was first released.
The five ‘Golden Ticket’ winners, plus one of the Oompa Loompas appeared on the Today Show, talking about how their lives have changed since appearing in the cult classic.
The cast also revealed that Gene Wilder did not lord his cinematic status over any of the kids on set. One cast member says: “‘There was never any “Please don’t bother Mr Wilder”, and we must have been pretty tiresome. We must have been.’”
So what do they all look like today?
Michael Bollner, who played Augustus Gloop, has certainly grown.
Violet Beauregarde, played by Denise Nickerson, is apparently not chewing gum anymore.
Rusty Goffe, who was one of the all singing all dancing Oompa Loompas, has seen the green hair change in colour and density.
Despite all that television Paris Themmen, or Mike Teevee as he is perhaps better known, does not have square eyes.
Julie Dawn Cole, who portrayed the spoiled brat Veruca Salt, was never such an annoying human being after all, revealing the director pushed her further and further with her character.
It’s fun to be bad and to be encouraged to be bad. Usually your parents are telling you “don’t do this, don’t do that” and we had Mel Stuart our director saying “be meaner, be meaner, be meaner.”
And then there is of course the hero, Charlie Bucket, played by Peter Ostrum. This fella decided to give up the role as Wonka’s right hand man, instead devoting his life to becoming a vet.
The chocolate river was water?! Suddenly I no longer envy Augustus Gloop.
