A nurse who had unprotected sex with Charlie Sheen despite knowing that he was HIV positive has said that she did it because “I was in love with him.”
Amanda Bruce said she’d been dating Sheen for around eight months and revealed how the actor had broken down in tears when he told her he had been diagnosed with HIV.
Appearing on The Dr Oz Show, she spoke of how the two had been intimate ‘every day’ but that she first spoken with doctors and took PrEP (pre- exposure prophylaxisto) to reduce the risk of contracting the virus before they had sex.
Bruce explained that she wanted to have unprotected sex with Sheen despite his diagnosis as she wanted to feel close to him.
The reality is, we had known each other for many months before we engaged in [sexual relations], and we were a couple, I was in love with him.
Sheen’s Doctor, Dr Robert Huizenga, appeared with Bruce on the show and said that he’d advised against the couple having unprotected sex.
Dr. Huizenga said:
My advice to her was, Don’t do it, but the risk is miniscule. And she elected to then go forward because she felt so close and wanted that level of intimacy.
The two were exclusive when they began having unprotected sex according to Bruce, who also said that Sheen was always good about taking his medicine .
Bruce said she and Sheen have since split but remain friends and are no longer sleeping together.
She also revealed that she’s HIV-negative and that she hopes that Sheen going public will help remove some of the stigma that surrounds the virus.
TMZ however is reporting that six of Sheen’s former partners are planning to sue the actor for “intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraud and sexual battery”.
Some of these women are claiming they’ve had both protected and unprotected sex with Sheen as recently as a month ago.
