Authorities have determined that a young woman who died after climbing into a yard with two dangerous dogs committed suicide, Buzzfeed reports.
Rebecca Hardy, of Port Huron, Michigan, died last week after being mauled to death by a pit bull and a pit bull-husky mix. According to police, Hardy climbed into the backyard of a home where the two dogs were.
Police have said the pit bull attacked Hardy on the face and neck, while the other dog attacked her the lower part of her body.
A witness who saw the savage attack tried to help but couldn’t. They did however manage to alert the dog’s owner who was able to free Hardy. She was rushed to a hospital, but unfortunately died of her injuries.
The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s office has determined that Hardy’s death was a suicide, although the investigation is ongoing.
Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Dr. Ljubisa J. Dragovic, the county’s chief medical examiner said that they determined it was a suicide because Hardy knew the risks when she went into the yard of her own free will.
Dr Dragovic said: “She subjected herself to the situation of mauling by the dogs… The fact is that she made a purposeful act by climbing the fence.”
The doctor says that Hardy had gotten into an argument at home and left the house barefoot. She then went to where she knew the dogs were, knowing they were aggressive and climbed over the fence and into the yard. Hardy had also attempted suicide in the past.
However Matt Grattan, Hardy’s fiancé, told the Times-Herald he doesn’t believe Hardy would have killed herself, because he didn’t think Hardy would leave him or her 1-year-old daughter.
I, in no way, shape or form, believe that she was looking to hurt herself on that day… She had a little girl… She wanted us to be a family.
A fundraising page has been set up to help support Hardy’s daughter. The page gives tribute to Miss Hardy saying: “She was full of life and she loved her daughter with everything. She would brighten up the room when she walked in.”
