Think the wait between Game of Thrones series is already too long? Well, be prepared to wait longer – much longer.

While new seasons of the hit HBO show traditionally start in April, it looks like fans may have to wait until as late as Autumn for GoT’s seventh season as filming has been pushed back.

What’s to blame for this nonsense? According to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, it’s the weather.

Now that winter is here, the appropriate weather to film needs to be too.

Speaking on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, the showrunners said:

We don’t have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a little later.

We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘winter is here’ – and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more.

So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.

I mean, fair enough – but I’m still not happy about it.

Not only will next year’s season be longer to wait for and gloomier, but it will also be shorter than previous seasons, featuring just seven episodes instead of 10.

The showrunners recently confirmed the final seven episodes of the show are likely to air a year later in 2018.

They said:

We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end.

As Dan said, we’ve known the end for quite some time and we’re hurtling towards it.

The thing that has excited us from the beginning, back to the way we pitched it to HBO is, it’s not supposed to be an on-going show, where every season it’s trying to figure out new story lines.

While I’m sure Game of Thrones fans are less than pleased about the new wait time, it gives us a few extra months to come up with new theories – like where the hell Gendry is.
