Following the latest ISIS propaganda video featuring a seemingly British executioner, UK intelligence forces are rushing to confirm the man’s identity.
Speculation is already rife that the masked gunman is known in Britain, and evaded police to flee to Syria and the so-called Islamic State.
According to various media outlets the executioner is suspected of being Siddartha Dhar, a father-of-four who converted to Islam from Hinduism.
Dhar, who changed his name to Abu Rumaysah when he switched faith, was interviewed by documentary maker Mojtaba Ali prior to being arrested for encouraging terrorism in 2014.
According to The Independent Ali has said in the wake of footage that the “new Jihadi John seems to be Abu Rumaysah”.
Dhar’s own sister has admitted she believes there is a similarity in voice to her brother, but stopped short of saying she thought it was him.
Konika Dhar told the Daily Mail:
If it is him, bloody hell am I shocked? I am going to kill him myself. He is going to come back and I am going to kill him if he has done this.
I can’t believe it. This is just so shocking for me. I don’t know what the authorities are doing to confirm the identity, but I need to know if it is.”
Doubt has been cast over the man’s identity following comments made by analyst Charles Lister, formerly of the Brookings Institute in Doha.
Lister stated that there are “subtle differences and pronunciations” in the vocal patterns of Dhar and the man in the video.
Scotland Yard have yet to confirm whether they believe that former bouncy castle salesman Dhar is the man being tasked by ISIS to execute prisoners.
