Colombia has had an early Christmas present. They have discovered a Spanish galleon holding an estimated £1 billion worth of treasure.
The San Jose galleon was discovered off the coast of Cartagena, and early reports indicate that the ship was carrying a massive haul of gold, silver and emeralds.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been quick to hail the discovery, increasing the hype surrounding the supposed value.
This is the most valuable treasure that has been found in the history of humanity.”
The ship was part of the fleet that fought against England during the War of the Spanish Succession , belonging to King Phillip V, and sank on June 8 1708.
But there is a dispute over the wreckage as American salvagers, Sea Search Armada, say the discovery site was established by them in 1981.
In 2011 The Supreme Court ruled that Colombia holds the rights to items deemed to be “national cultural patrimony.” The rest will be halved between the nation and SSA.
I smell a story line for a new Pirates of the Caribbean film.
