A man claiming to be the Orlando shooter’s ex-lover has spoken out about the gunman’s motives.

Coming forward to speak with American-Spanish broadcast television network Univision, the alleged ex-lover of Mateen has said he believes the 29-year-old carried out the Orlando massacre that killed 49 people in Pulse nightclub, not as a terrorist attack, but as revenge.

The information, if true, fuels indications that Omar Mateen was homophobic, unhinged and motivated by hate.

Referring to himself only as ‘Miguel’ and wearing a disguise, he says Mateen held a grudge on the night of the massacre because he ‘felt used’ by Latino men and was ‘terrified’ after one of his lovers turned up HIV positive.

He told Univision:

He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin — but he felt rejected … The truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge … He was terrified that he was infected.

I asked him, ‘Did you do a test?’ Yes. He went to the pharmacy and did the test … it came out negative but it doesn’t come out right away. It takes four, five months.

Speaking in Spanish and broken English, Miguel said that despite tests coming up negative, Mateen feared not enough time had passed for an accurate result, and he wanted to ‘make them pay’, the Daily Mail reports.

When asked why he decided to come forward with his story, Miguel said:

It’s my responsibility as a citizen of the United States and a gay man…The thing that makes me want to tell the truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge.

According to Miguel, Mateen’s wife and possibly even his father knew about his gay trysts. He claims that Mateen spoke about Islam during their relationship, describing it as ‘a beautiful religion in which everyone is welcome – gays, trans, bisexuals, heteros, everyone.’

But Miguel says that it became clear Mateen had a deep hatred for his own sexuality and for Puerto Rican gay men:

He hated Puerto Rican gays for all the bad stuff they did. Pulse is where he felt used, rejected.

He was always there and he was there because he liked Latinos and he was attracted to dark skin. But sadly, from what he told me, he felt used.

He felt anger, a lot of anger towards Puerto Ricans.

He also believes Mateen was ‘a confused, gay man who drank heavily.’

While there’s no way of knowing whether Miguel is telling the truth, he does claim he spoke to the FBI three times after the massacre about his involvement with Mateen, and his claims further fuel beliefs that Mateen led a double life and was motivated by hate.
