A woman, who sent a sex tape to her ex-boyfriend, has committed suicide after it was published online and she was sent a barrage of abuse.

Tiziana Cantone, of Naples, was filmed performing a sexual act on a man in footage that was leaked and went viral on the internet.

Before her death, she had battled with the courts to get the explicit video taken down, but it had already been watched an shared hundreds of thousands of times.

After her full name and identity was also published, she was subject to a lot of ridicule with trolls creating a meme of her.

The Sun reports that she sent it to her ex-boyfriend to make him jealous but it was then uploaded online in revenge.

Tiziana, 31, quit her job and moved her life to the Italian countryside after being recognised and mocked in Naples.

She was in the process of changing her name when she was found dead after her third suicide attempt. Her mother told the BBC that she had tried to kill herself twice before.

Before her death Tiziana had won a “right to be forgotten” ruling which meant any sites hosting the video were ordered to remove it, but as a final kick in the teeth, the courts ordered her to pay €20,000 (£17,000) in legal costs.

Italian author Roberto Saviano spoke of Italy’s “morbid” relationship with sex. In a tweet dedicated to Tiziana, he said “I grieve for Tiziana, who killed herself because she was a woman in a country where uninhibited and playful sex is still the worst of sins,”

Not everyone was so supportive as Walter Caputo, a Turin city councillor for the Democratic Party of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, wrote on Facebook that Tiziana had perhaps been “aiming for a certain notoriety” and was “certainly not a saint”.

Her mother, Maria Theresa, said:

She was suffering from everything she saw and heard and in particular from the outcome of the legal proceedings, because she believed justice had not been done.

Her friend Teresa Petrosino told Corriere della Sera:

I wonder how anyone can be so fierce, how to rage against a girl who has not done anything wrong.

I think that they should be ashamed, all those who have filled the web with insults and meanwhile secretly watched the images.

Prosecutors have opened an inquest in Naples to see if they could bring criminal charges.
