A married high school teacher has been charged with a felony sex offence after being accused of having sex with one of her 18-year-old students – even though he is of legal age.
Teika Watkins Helton, 45, an English teacher at South Point High School in North Carolina allegedly had sex with the student once in a car between May 18 and May 22, just weeks before his graduation on June 13.
Helton had been an English teacher at South Point High School since 1997 and was even named ‘Gaston County Teacher of the Year’ in 2005, however she has now resigned her post after police began investigating in October.
In North Carolina it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student even if they are not underage. The Gaston County Assistant Police Chief, Joseph Ramey, confirmed that further claims were being investigated but no other victims had yet been identified.
