A 59-year-old man has been accused of kidnapping and attempting to murder two young backpackers on a deserted beach.
According to the Mirror, the women – who are both in their twenties – were rescued when one of them managed to escape and was spotted running naked, covered in blood and screaming for help.
The backpackers – believed to be European – were seriously injured and told their rescuers that one of them was hit over the head with a hammer, while the other run had been run over.
The pair allegedly met the man yesterday and decided to camp together at Coorong National Park in South Australia.
It was in this isolated location that the man – who has not been named but is from Adelaide – allegedly attacked the women, raping one of them.
Witnesses told local broadcasters that the attack was incredibly similar to that in the movie Wolf Creek.
Speaking to Seven TV News, they said:
She ran straight to the car yelling. She opened the back door, jumped straight in and like, ‘get me out of here, get me out of here. He’s going to kill us all’.
They called the police and rescuers found the second backpacker barely conscious, before airlifting them both to hospital. One was treated for a significant head injury.
When police caught the alleged attacker, his vehicle was found covered in blood and stuck in the sand. A large knife and hook were also reported as being found at a nearby camp, Seven News reports.
When police caught the alleged attacker, his four-wheel drive was reportedly found covered in blood and stuck in the sand.
Police are now investigating whether the man was involved in any other crimes.
