There’s being an overprotective father and then there’s just being a violent nutjob.

This stepdad was very much the latter, stabbing his daughter’s new boyfriend in the heart, simply because he didn’t approve of him.

Anthony Osmond, 52, was jailed for knifing Gareth Jones in the chest after he started dating 20-year-old daughter Oasis, the Mirror Online reports.

Fortunately, 29-year-old Gareth survived the attack, but only after doctors at Morriston Hospital in Swansea were able to perform life-saving surgery and repair the cut to his heart.

At Swansea Crown Court, Osmond was described as “obsessive” and “overprotective”, which we’d say is something of an understatement. Apparently, he even sent Gareth messages on his phone and Facebook saying: “You’re dead”.

Given Osmond’s terrible and terrifying attitude then, it’s no surprise that the young couple opted to keep their relationship a secret at the beginning. However, when the scary stepdad learned of the relationship, he “insisted on meeting him”, according to prosecutor Helen Randall.

But, when Osmond went to meet Gareth at the pub in Abercych, Pembrokeshire where Oasis works, he confronted him and the two began fighting. During the scuffle, Osmond picked up a six-inch long kitchen knife and plunged it into Gareth’s chest. Osmond then fled the scene in his car.

During police interviews, Osmond told officers he didn’t consider Gareth to be “appropriate” for Oasis. However, his defence solicitor Janet Gedrych claimed that Osmond hadn’t grabbed the knife deliberately and “is devastated at how close he came to killing that young man”.

Osmond, of Velindre, Carmarthenshire, West Wales, admitted unlawful wounding and was jailed for two-and-a-half years. Hopefully, his time behind bars will teach him to chill out a bit…
