Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, you’ll know what ‘On Fleek’ means.

The phrase has been used to describe everything from eyebrows to a song, and now the woman who has invented the phrase has spoken out.

Kayla Newman came up with the phrase in a vine during the middle of last year, and says that despite the word now being used to advertise pretty much everything, she’s not seen a penny.

She spoke to The Fader, and said:

I gave the world a word.

I can’t explain the feeling. At the moment I haven’t gotten any endorsements or received any payment. I feel that I should be compensated.

Should a corporation make a phrase, they would automatically be able to trademark it, but Newman’s phrase has been used to sell Doritos and Pancakes – and given her nothing in return.

It really does show how shitty the current copyright laws are in the USA, and let’s be honest Newman really has been screwed over here.
