As Game of Thrones fans tune into the show tonight, they will witness the return of red-headed prostitute Marei.

But what many fans don’t know is that for actress Josephine Gillan this was her startling reality before finding stardom on GoT, a role that helped her escape prostitution.

These days she’s in a TV show watched by millions and is in serious demand as an actress- despite receiving no professional training before she started the show.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Josephine said: “Game Of Thrones saved me from a life of prostitution, and has made me a much stronger person.”

Josephine explained that she was working as a ‘whore’ and was also making adult films under the name Sophie O’Brien before she saw an advert for film actresses.

She said:

They were looking for young women with natural breasts and no tattoos, who didn’t mind being filmed naked. So I immediately sent in a picture. They wrote back that they wanted me and I was thrilled because it was an amazing opportunity to do some proper acting. But I had no idea how much it would change my life.

Josephine suffered a difficult childhood, corrupted by sex abuse, alcohol and hard drugs. She went to 24 different primary schools as her mother fled a violent relationship, and was taken into care at 12 and then fostered, the Daily Mail reports.

A family friend groomed her while she was in care and was given cannabis and alcohol when she was 12, and hooked on cocaine by the time she was 14. She was raped two years by him and then pimped out to his friends.

“I was too frightened to tell anyone because he threatened to bury me in the garden if I did. He said he’d done it before and I believed him”, she says.

Because of these horrific experiences, it made her finding proper relationships tricky and broke off an engagement before turning to prostitution as a living.

By the time she arrived on the Game Of Thrones set – to make her on-screen debut back in series two as a novice prostitute being shown how to fake an orgasm – she was understandably nervous about the experience- but not as nervous as the guys are during sex scenes it seems.

She added:

People ask me all the time if we are at it for real and I reply, ‘Are dragons or zombies real?’ The reality is that the male actors are so uncomfortable doing sex scenes that I can usually feel them shaking nervously under me. I think they suffer from performance anxiety, because they are almost naked and there are usually about 30 crew members on set.

Because of her experience in the porn industry, it made her a natural performer and she has gone on to become one of the longest surviving characters in the series and has already been signed up for series seven, which begins filming later this year.

The show has received some pretty grim criticism for some of the graphic murders and sex, but Josephine wants to remind everyone that this is just a fantasy world after all, concluding: “Watch the entertainment and enjoy. Or don’t if you’re too prudish.”

For her, this fantasy world has been the saviour of her real one.
