When it comes to sex, there’s a few things people aren’t comfortable with.

Toys, S&M, roleplay, and – more often than not – anal. Most women who don’t want to do it, don’t do it – but writer Bobby Box thinks they should do it anyway. And he’s penned an incredibly offensive opinion piece about it.

His now-deleted piece posted to media website Thrillist, ‘Straight Men Explain Their Fascination With Anal Sex’ is an ode to the heterosexual man’s passion for butts. Box suggests the reason why straight guys love anal so much is because women hate it, and that’s what turn guys on so much about it.

In the piece, Box lays out the reasons why butt sex is ‘a badge of honour that men wear proudly’. He quotes ‘expert’ Matt Diaz, owner of a sex toy website, saying that part of the reason why dudes love making their girlfriends do anal is because they don’t really want to do it in the first place. Hey, if that doesn’t scream romance I don’t know what does.

He writes:

Because so many women seem reluctant to allow a man to share this experience with them, there is an additional sense of accomplishment or feeling of conquest when a man has ‘convinced’ a woman to engage in anal sex.

Anal sex is not a conquest. You are not an explorer. The only thing you should be feeling is pleasure. And the only other word for ‘convincing’ a woman into having sex with you is coercion. And rape. You can see why this piece was forced to be taken down.

Later referencing comedian Jim Jeffries as saying ‘the reason men like fucking you in the ass is because we know you fucking hate it,’ Box wrote:

And he’s right. There’s something wildly attractive in the fact that a woman would be willing to do something she doesn’t want to, just because we want to.

Again, borderline rapey.

His piece concludes by claiming that anal sex is a ‘badge of honour that men wear proudly’ – making you the alpha male among your mates:

The greatest aspect of anal sex is being able to say you’ve had it. It’s a badge of honor we men wear proudly. If a guy hasn’t been fortunate enough to engage in said act, he’s seen as more of a beta among his group of buddies. Being able to say you’ve done the act is yet another factor that feeds our bravado. It makes us look cool and macho. And what’s cooler, and more macho, than being able to brag to your buddies?

While Box’s piece is no doubt misogynistic and rapey, it’s actually an example of very real and dangerous myths about anal sex. According to Mic, a 2014 study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, it’s common for young women to feel coerced into anal sex by their male partners – despite the fact that many don’t find it pleasurable, and even sometimes painful.

So if you’re going to take one thing from Box’s article, well, don’t.
