Tinder has launched a new feature that lets people, er, hang out in groups.

Tinder Social is intended as a way of letting people meet up in groups, with the aim of finding friends and making dates more fun. In other words, it’s a great way to plan an orgy.

Considering the dating app is often used as a way to get casual sex, it’s easy to see how people have mistaken the new ‘group dating’ feature as something a little raunchier.

Ben Wood from the CCS Insight consultancy told the BBC:

Tinder is seen by many as being a hook-up site.

So, it needs to be careful. By expanding in this direction, rather than becoming a more interesting social meeting service, it could be perceived as an orgy app.

Even Tinder’s statement can be a little group sex-ish at times:

Tinder has always been about getting you out of the house to meet someone new. But sometimes you want more than a party of two. Often your best nights are when you’re hanging with friends, someone makes an unexpected connection with someone in another crew, and your two crews have an amazing time together.

But it’s not just the underlying orgy aspect that is being hit with a bit of controversy.

When Tinder Social first test-launched in Australia, it had been criticised after the feature accessed people’s Facebook friends to let them invite friends – which was a problem for some since it revealed who was using the app.

Now, the feature is accessed by using only the latest version of the app and ‘unlocking’ Tinder Social, meaning that the problems with it accidentally revealing who’s on Tinder’s group feature are minimised.

Don’t want it? Don’t worry. The feature is only available if you unlock it manually.

Once Tinder Social has been unlocked, you can see friends who are also using it. To combine groups, at least one user from each group needs to swipe right.

And after being tested in Australia, it’s is now available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and New Zealand, Yahoo News reports.

The feature is being promoted through a card in the app which appears like another user, but it actually works as a prompt to try it out.

Happy orgy, er, group hunting!
