A world map of sex has revealed the average age at which people lose their virginity across the globe.

Durex – but who else?! – has released figures showing how old the average person from 44 different countries is when they pop their proverbial cherry.

And UK residents, somewhat surprisingly, are among the latest to shed their V-plates.

The UK ranked 19th out of a possible 44, with Brits loosing their virginity at 18.3-years-old (a whole year older than Irish teens) which is almost precisely the age you’re at during freshers week.

I wonder if there’s a correlation.

The eldest nation of youngsters to lose their virginity is Malaysia, where people tend not to have sex until turning 23-years-old, according to the study.

This could be due to a lack of sex education in the country’s curriculum.

But what of the youngest nation, on average, to lose their virginity?

It’s Icelanders who are first to shoot out of the starting blocks. Your average Icelandic kid first has sex at 15.6-years-old.

In fact, Scandinavian countries have the top five spots – or the bottom, whichever way you look at it – in the study, which I can only assume is due to boredom as a consequence of the lack of daylight, causing almost 24/7 mood lighting.

Denmark’s average age is 16.1, Sweden’s 16.2 and Norwegian teens lose their virginities at 16.5-years-old, as do the Finnish.

The study goes someway to tackle stereotypes of certain nationalities, with Italians and the French – who I’ve always thought of as a two particularly romantic nations – deflowering each other later in life that us Brits.

Amusingly, American teens seem to jump into bed the second its legal, with the average American having sex for the first time at exactly 18 (which is the age of consent across the pond).

It is by no means a global study, and further investigation into explaining these national differences has yet to take place.

In the meantime, kids around the world will happily continue to amass the data.
