University students across the country breathe a collective sigh of relief once all their summer exams are all done and dusted.

They can relax and even have time to let their hair down for one big blowout in the form of the summer ball before they return home for a few months.

But it’s probably safe to say that these guys probably took it all a little bit too far.

Durham University’s Champagne Society has been suspended over claims that its summer ball turned ‘potentially life-threatening’ after students were allegedly served two bottles of champagne each.

Officers policing the event at Hardwick Hall near Sedgefield said that it became a coke-fuelled party, where couples were openly having sex in public and many ended up stripping off and swimming in the lake.

Two students had to be taken to hospital following the event and several more were found unconscious around the venue- while others allegedly vomited on officers, the Northern Echo reports.

It got so out of hand in fact that the small group of officers policing the event were forced to call for back up.

On its Facebook page the group described it as the ‘largest, craziest and most extravagant ball to date’, costing each student £99 a ticket.

The venue also took a staggering £45,000 behind the bar from 1,300 students who attended, which pretty much tells its own story.

A spokesperson for the Champagne Society told the Northern Echo:

Many students felt that this event was the best event that they had been to in the entirety of their time in Durham. However, due to the scale of the event amongst other factors, we do recognise that there were problems at the ball. As a new executive committee we are fully committed to working in close alliance with both the police and the DSU in order to create events which are fundamentally safe for the student body.
