New research has presented evidence which could dramatically alter the regulations of the adult film industry.

A study of 265 men from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC demonstrated that men who watch porn which includes condom use were more likely to use protection when having anal sex.

As reported by the Independent, each of the participants had watched sexually explicit material in the three months prior to the survey, and also had sex with another man in that time.

The authors of the study believe it shows how pornography can influence viewers, and raises serious questions about the industry’s social responsibilities.

Eric Schrimshaw, from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and Martin J Downing Jr, of Public Health Solutions, said:

Men who viewed more pornography containing condom use engaged in fewer condomless anal sex encounters.

Even those who took part in compulsive pornography viewing were not more likely to engage in condomless anal sex.

These findings have important policy and HIV prevention implications…The potentially negative consequences on behaviour, therefore, has policy implications for pornography directors, producers, distributors, performers, and viewers.

92 per cent of participants said they watched condomless anal porn in the three months, with nearly half then reporting it encouraged them to take greater health risks when having sex.

It’s pretty hard for the industry to deny its influence in light of this info, and it adds fuel to the debate over whether regulators should enforce a blanket rule over condom use.
