There’s a new BBC blockbuster set to hit our screens with a lot of nudity, and the Daily Mail are NOT happy at all – even though they will probably be watching, like the rest of us.

Versailles is about the life of France’s King Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, and cost £21 million to make.

It sounds pretty good, but news that the BBC plan to show a programme containing nudity has sent the Daily Mail into a moral outrage meltdown, slamming it as the ‘most sexually graphic costume drama ever shown on British TV’.

Things from the first episode they are outraged by include: “gay sex, a cross-dressing prince, and a queen with a penchant for dwarves,” as well as, “the king, played by English actor George Blagden… burying his head between his mistress’s thighs.”

The drama was originally aired in France, where it also caused controversy, but for far more French reasons. Across the channel, they were pissed off because producers ‘dumbed down’ the story of Louis XIV, and that it was in English – fair enough, really.

And it’s not only the Mail and the French who aren’t happy about Versailles, apparently MPs and family rights campaigners are disgusted by the sex scenes and nudity, describing it as ‘porn dressed up in a cravat and tights’, which, to be fair, sounds a lot more clothed than regular porn.

There’s also violence as well, including torture scenes, someone getting bludgeoned to death with a hammer and a man getting his hand severed at the wrist – sounds like someone’s been watching Game of Thrones.

Apparently the BBC purchased the rights for the show in a bid to challenge ITV’s success with Downton Abbey, and it’s expected to hit our screens in May, although the broadcaster hasn’t announced what time the ten-part series will air.

Sounds alright, but I’ll stick to Game of Thrones – the new season looks incredible.
