An adorable kitten is on the road to recovery after being found abandoned on the side of a California road.

The young feline was discovered in a box, covered in wounds, and with his fur dyed purple.

It is believed the vulnerable kitten, thought to be only two-months-old, was used as a living chew toy for a dog.

The Nine Lives Foundation who are caring for the kitten, now known as Smurf, have released a series of photos to show he is on the mend.

Speaking to the Dodo Vet Monica Rudiger suggested the despicable treatment is common within the dark world of training fighting dogs.

She said:

I don’t know what happened to him, but my best guess is that he was used as a chew toy. We have a cat with multiple puncture wounds and abrasions.

He can’t tell us what happened to him, but I’ve seen this before. I’ve seen kittens be used as bait and chew toys for other animals. It makes sense to me.”

She added:

In our area, cats are used as bait for pit bulls every day. It’s just horrifying. That’s why you don’t offer free kittens out on the internet — they use them for whatever they want. Who knows what Smurf’s story was? I wonder about all the other kitties we don’t get to save.”

Sadly Rudiger has predicted the purple dye that has dramatically altered Smurf’s appearance is not likely to ever come out.

She said:

We’ll never get that purple dye out of him. He’s been shaved and he’s still purple. It’s so deep; It’s probably undiluted garment dye.

I hope it ends well for him, but he seems to be doing really well.”

Smurf will be put up for adoption when his wounds have fully healed, and with offers coming in from around the world his days of suffering will be long behind him soon.

Hopefully the atrocious excuse for a human being that put the poor mite through such torture will be brought to justice too. Not just for Smurf’s sake, but any other animals unfortunate enough to be in their possession.
