Sports Illustrated Makes History, Features Plus Size Model On Cover si headerSports Illustrated

The three new covers for Sports Illustrated’s 2016 Swimsuit Issue have been unveiled and the magazine has made history by putting a ‘plus-size’ model on one of the covers for the first time.

The trio of covers highlight three beautiful women of varying body types, with Ashley Graham, Ronda Rousey and Hailey Clauson each gracing their own individual cover.

Size 16 model Graham recently shared her excitement at being part of the magazine, and judging by her Instagram post this morning, she was even more thrilled when she found out she’d made the cover, dedicating it to “every woman who felt like she wasn’t beautiful enough because of her size”.

Speaking to People, she added:

I thought Sports Illustrated was taking a risk by putting a girl my size in the pages. But putting me on the cover? They aren’t just breaking barriers. They are the standard now. This is beyond epic.

By using Graham, Rousey and Clauson as the three cover models, SI are hoping they can inspire women to embrace the uniqueness of their bodies.

According to Yahoo News, SI’s assistant managing editor, MJ Day, said:

The three covers of Hailey, Ronda and Ashley celebrate the new SI Swimsuit. All three women are beautiful, sexy, and strong. Beauty is not cookie cutter. Beauty is not ‘one size fits all.’ Beauty is all around us and that became especially obvious to me while shooting and editing this year’s issue.

UFC star Ronda Rousey, of course, was well known to be appearing in the magazine, with photos of her shoot in that body paint swimsuit leaking last month.

Skier Lindsey Vonn and professional tennis player Caroline Wozniacki also did a body paint photo shoot for the issue.

This year’s edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition will hit shelves tomorrow, with all three covers available to buy.
