Lately more than ever, we are hearing a constant deluge of negativity towards refugees and asylum seekers.

We hear very little about the refugees who worked as doctors, teachers, and artists who would like nothing more than to be safe in their own country.

Instead, the world is full of offensive stereotypes about those who have had to flee, and are now just looking for somewhere that welcomes them. But one Syrian man is trying to change that – by becoming a porn star.

Antonio Sulieman arrived in Germany from Aleppo, Syria in 2012 as an asylum seeker.

At 19-years-old, he wants to add a different flavour to the portrayal of refugees, saying he hopes to show the ‘Syrian body’ as one that makes love, rather than one associated with violence.

But Suleiman never planned to be a porn star. In Syria and later in Germany, he had dreams of becoming an actor – but his nationality and the unfortunate negative connotations associated with it prevented him from doing so.

After fleeing his war-torn country, Sulieman said he decided to use his body to express himself through pornography after being left with ‘no other choice’. Speaking to The Local, he said: “I was stuck in a dead end.”

He added:

In Syria I always wanted to become a (non-pornographic) actor. Performing on stage or in movies has always been my dream.

Once they found out I was Syrian, their replies were immediately either ‘bye’ or ‘we may contact you later’ (which meant the same thing).

All the doors were shut because of my nationality.

And that’s when Suleiman turned to porn.

But while he may be proud of his decision, Suleiman says he has faced criticism for his choice.

He responded, saying:

For over five years now, Syrians have mainly been pictured under rubble, massacred, their dead bodies in the Mediterranean, or humiliated throughout their perilous journey to Europe. Surely that’s what degrades and violates the ‘Syrian body’.

Yes, I used my body. I used it to show that this body can make love, can have sex, and does not only exist in order to die.

So while some may criticise his decision to go into porn, Suleiman seems to be proud of what he does.

You have to admire his willingness to try anything to improve the view of refugees, though – even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
