Failed Prime Ministerial candidate Andrea Leadsom has caused fresh outrage after suggesting men who work in child care are likely paedophiles.
Leadsom, who according to the Daily Mirror had employed a male nanny for five years, made the comments in the same Times interview where she suggested Theresa May’s lack of children made her a less suitable candidate to become PM.
The quotes were not immediately published while Leadsom was still running for party leadership, but raise fresh questions about her suitability to be a leading UK politician.
According to The Times, Mrs Leadsom said:
As an employer we’re not, let’s face it, most of us don’t employ men as nannies, most of us don’t.
Now you can call that sexist, I call that cautious and very sensible when you look at the stats. Your odds are stacked against you if you employ a man.
We know paedophiles are attracted to working with children. I’m sorry but they’re the facts.
The comments have been met with understandable scorn and calls for the newly appointed Environment Secretary to be sacked from the cabinet by Prime Minister Theresa May.
Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron argued:
These remarks are stupid, ignorant and not ones any minister should be making.
Over the last day Theresa May has shown she is willing to relieve ministers of their duties and she must do so again now.
It is inconceivable that somebody who holds such offensive, ignorant views should be sat around the cabinet table.
Leadsom insisted her initial comments about May were taking out of context, and texted the newly appointed PM to apologise for any hurt caused, but she has yet to comment on the latest controversy.
Paedophilia is obviously an abhorrent crime, but it is not perpetrated solely by men.
It seems Leadsom is hell bent on digging a hole for herself from which she should not be handed an escape rope.
