The terror threat level in the UK could be raised to the highest possible level following Friday night’s horrific attacks in Paris, which killed 129 people.
Prime Minister David Cameron is set to chair a Cobra meeting this morning where they will discuss the possibility of raising the threat level to ‘critical’.
This would be the first time since 2007 that the terror threat level has been so high and means an attack is expected ‘imminently’.
This comes after Nick Alexander, from Colchester was named among those who were killed in the attacks in Paris. The 36-year-old died in the attack at the Bataclan Concert Hall, where it’s believed he was selling merchandise.
A senior Met Police officer stated there will be a heightened police presence at British ports and major events over the come days in response to the massacres in Paris.
This was demonstrated yesterday when Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal was evacuated after 41-year-old Frenchman Jerome Chauris was arrested after approaching an easyJet check in desk armed with a knife and air rifle.
The assistant commissioner for specialist operations in London, Mark Rowley said the official terror threat level is likely to be reviewed and possibly raised further by David Cameron. He also called for “vigilance” from the British public and to report any suspicious activity.
We can’t let the terrorists defeat us by becoming fearful and withdrawing from the streets. It comes down to trust between communities and the ability for the public to trust the police and work with us and supply us with the sort of information they have been very effectively over the past year. We are strengthening our policing stance across the country at the moment, and we are reviewing that later this morning, no doubt, with the Prime Minister at Cobra. We are strengthening our ability to protect the public. We will be looking at events today and the policing profile there.
London is thought to now be a prime target for a follow up attack after the atrocities in the French capital.
