You might want to start getting the rounds in with your partner – if you want a stronger relationship that is.

According to a new study published in the Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Series, the secret to a long, happy relationship could be lurking in a cheeky bev.

Who’d have thought it? Because what’s more romantic then the aftermath of a night out featuring you passing out on your bed, while your S.O. chunders in a nearby toilet?

But in all seriousness, apparently having similar drinking habits can play a big role in sustaining your relationship.

Researchers surveyed almost 5,000 married people, who have been together for an average of 33 years, to discover how drinking can affect romantic relationships.

They found that couples over the age of 50 reported much better marriages if both partners drank alcohol. However, if one partner drank and the other didn’t, they were more likely to feel unsatisfied in their marriage.

Dr. Kira Birditt, a researcher with the University of Michigan who authored the study, told Reuters:

We’re not sure why this is happening. But it could be that couples that do more leisure time activities together have better marital quality.

The amount people drank didn’t really affect the quality of their relationships, but obviously drinking in excess on a regular basis did have rather negative connotations.

Basically, as long as you both don’t get trashed every night and just have a romantic glass of wine or two, you’ll have a better chance of reaching peak relationship goals.
