Are you the type of person who peppers your messages with winky smileys? If so, congratulations, apparently you’re more likely to have a better sex life.
Match.com surveyed 5,600 single online daters and discovered that around 36 to 40 per cent of people who think about sex several times a day are more likely to use more than one emoji in every text they send.
Apparently emoji users are also more likely to actually have sex, with 54 per cent of people who used emojis saying that they had sex in 2014 compared to 31 per cent of non-emoji fans.
However, the study also found that those who think about sex less often still use emojis sometimes, just not in all of their messages.
Match.com also report that people who suppress their sexual desires rarely ever use smileys.
Unsurprisingly the survey found that the winky face was the most popular emoji, closely followed by the standard smiley face and the kissing face.
Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University who helped lead the study, told TIME:
It’s notoriously difficult to read tone in texts and emails, but emojis can bridge the gap. [Emoji users] want to give their texts more personality… Here we have a new technology that absolutely jeopardizes your ability to express your emotion… there is no more subtle inflection of the voice … and so we have created another way to express emotions and that is the emoji.
Dr Fisher went on to explain that emoji users don’t just have more sex, they also go on more dates and are two times more likely to want to get married. Fisher says: “Sixty-two percent of emoji users want to get married compared to 30 percent of people who never used an emoji… that’s pretty good.”
So there we have it, if you’re struggling for a date or going through a dry spell why not try sending a winking smiley – who knows, you may get lucky.
