Lifelong Orient fan John Burman – known to friends as ‘Chingford John’ – passed away last May aged 55, with the League One club today revealing his generous donation.

Orient will dedicate Saturday’s home clash against Peterborough to the Stoke Newington-born former railway-signal operator, who is described on the club’s website as a man with a ‘passion for films, punk rock music and of course the O’s’.

Orient chairman Barry Hearn said: ‘This is a wonderful gesture from John, who was by all accounts a remarkable man.

‘He was a true Orient supporter and we will be celebrating his life on Saturday, whilst the significant money he has left will ensure that his legacy lives on and the club he so passionately supported can live on and continue to grow.’

John’s donation could help the O’s in their hunt for promotion to the Championship this season. Russell Slade’s side currently sit third in the League One table.
