Rugby Union: A game for hooligans, played by gentlemen.
That saying doesn’t quite wash in Argentina though, where prop Cipriano Martinez is reportedly facing a life time ban from the sport for brutally kicking an opponent in the head.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, the incident occurred last weekend in Buenos Aires as Pucará Club faced San Albano in the Torneo de la URBA.
Martinez was representing Pucará when he saw red and attempted to place kick second rower Juan Masi’s head into the distance.
There is no possible defence for that disgraceful act.
It has been reported the club has banned Martinez for 99 years, although this was not confirmed by an official statement.
Pucará Club renounces the anti-sporting conduct which occurred in the match against San Albano.
We wish to extend appropriate apologies to the injured player, to the San Albano Club, and to rugby in general.
Martinez, who was immediately red carded, is now awaiting the verdict of the sport’s governing body in Argentina, meanwhile Masi was not seriously injured.
What was he thinking?
