If there was one place that was more interesting than the football on show at Euro 2016, it was Twitter.
The 140-character social media platform is a breeding ground of memes, photoshopped pictures and – if you follow the right people – cracking football related tweets.
So, while Portugal’s 1-0 win over France in the final last week was hardly the most enthralling, Twitter on point, and produced a couple of tweets that made it into the top ten most retweeted of the tournament.
Starting with the tenth and working up to the most retweeted, here are the ten biggest Twitter hits of Euro 2016:
Firstly, it was a classic putdown from Turkey’s official football account aimed at Croatia:

Then Gareth Bale used his Twitter powers to good effect:
And then he somehow managed to get another 48k retweets by tweeting just one word…

Then it was star of the tournament Antoine Griezmann’s turn, with a little help from Photoshop:
And because it’s Twitter, the One Direction muppets got in there:
delighted for Wales. What a hearty performance . Credit to Chris coleman for setting those boys up well , they knew what they were doing

Before Griezmann got his second tweet in the top ten:
Plus qu'un match ! On peut le faire 💪🏼🙏🏼 🇫🇷 pic.twitter.com/Ohhf0bJs6n

But Bale pipped the Atletico Madrid star to the third most retweeted effort:
Terrible to see Cris come off like that. Hope it's nothing too bad 🙏🏼

Although Cristiano Ronaldo was not to be outdone, naturally:

But number one was everyone’s favourite Twitter presence, Gary Lineker, hammering the England team:
The worst defeat in our history. England beaten by a country with more volcanoes than professional footballers. Well played Iceland.

So there you go, if you want to get major impact with your tweets, just give England a battering.
