There could finally be a solution for dealing with all those annoying cold calls trying to sell you PPI or just generally annoying the shit out of you – and it’s free.
Set up in March this year, call blocking firm Truecall 38 has received over 18,000 cold calls that have been directed away from private phone lines.
When you’re asked to enter your personal details including a phone number when filling in a form online instead of putting in your own mobile or landline phone number – opening yourself up to a barrage of cold callers – you simply enter the number 0333 88 88 88 88.
Then when someone tries to call up asking if you’ve had an accident in the last five years, they will be diverted to Truecall38. Whoever is calling will hear the message: “Truecall38 is handling my calls. I prefer not to be contacted by phone so please contact me via my email address.”
The company is owned by Truecall, which sells a range of call blocking products and was first launched in 2008 after Director Steve Smith took his idea in front of the panel on Dragons’ Den.
Some users have voiced concerns that companies may start blocking the Truecall38 number, forcing them to go back to putting in their own numbers. However Truecall say if this happens, they will publish the names of the companies on a ‘Wall of Shame’ on the website.
One thing that is worth remembering is if you’re using this service you’ll need to keep an eye on your emails for changes to any orders – such as date and time changes on concert tickets.
Got to be worth doing.
