Game of Thrones’ days are numbered – winter’s finally arrived and we know the show will come to a dramatic close after season eight… Or will it?

HBO has never made a prequel or spinoff series from one of its scripted hits, but GoT could change that.

Rumours have long suggested that a prequel or spin-off series could be in the works but George R. R. Martin recently described the reports as simply ‘speculation’. However, Entertainment Weekly reports that, according to the network’s programming president Casey Bloys, a Game of Thrones prequel series isn’t off the table

According to Bloys, the Powers That Be are hosting ‘preliminary’ talks with franchise mastermind George R.R. Martin about where to take A Song of Ice and Fire next.

He said: “I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’”

So basically, there are lots of ideas but they haven’t decided on one yet. Hopefully this actually plays out and we get a GoT spinoff before our tits and dragons withdrawal kicks in.

We already know from past interviews that Martin himself has been marinating on a spinoff idea that could involve the trio of Dunk and Egg novellas that chronicle the bond between young Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Aegon Targaryen.

As for when and if this is actually in the works is yet to be determined. With season seven currently underway and season eight coming up soon after, it looks like the possibility of a spinoff is only in talks right now – but that’s better than nothing.

Looking at season eight, Bloys claimed he’ll ‘take as much as [he] can get’ when it comes to the total number of episodes remaining.

As for the proposition of screening the last few Game of Thrones episodes in theaters, Bloys said: “I want everything I can get for HBO, I’ll just leave it at that.”

Thrones returns next summer for its seventh season, which will have seven episodes.
