One selfless youngster really embraced the spirit of Christmas over the festive period, giving up his presents in order to help the less fortunate.
In a viral YouTube video, Alex Hovater, 6, from Bakersfield, California can be seen approaching homeless people in his hometown and providing them with bags of food, water and clothing.
According to reports in local media, the amazing young lad was inspired to help the strangers in his area when he spotted a man sleeping under a bridge.
Speaking to KBAK, Alex’s mother Machelle Hovater, said:
He had a lot of questions. He wanted to know if that’s where he lived and what he would eat and how he would stay warm.
And when Alex learned about the man’s situation and how he had little means of staying warm in the winter months, he didn’t hesitate to give up his own Xmas gifts so he could help and, in his own words, “do a nice thing for other people”.
I was like, well it’s getting close to Christmas and it’s gonna get cold outside, so at least give him a little snack and water and a jacket before it freezes up.
The family assembled eight care packages and took Alex to deliver them to people living on the street.
Machelle posted the clip of Alex’s good deed online in the hope it would inspire others to follow suit.
We tend to want to give our kids everything. Growing up with that sense of entitlement and that sense of ‘I want, I want, I want,’ we kind of lose sight of what Christmas and what giving really truly is.
She also created the hashtag #AlexGivingChallenge to encourage people to upload their own videos of good deeds and try and get stories of generosity trending over the festive period.
We can all learn a lot from this young lad’s example. What an inspirational kid!
