Model Amber Rose brought the SlutWalk tradition to Los Angeles on Saturday, an event which drew hundreds of people, and she opened up about her own experiences in an emotional speech to the crowd.

SlutWalks are events which encourage participants to dress in revealing clothing to send a message about consent and that women shouldn’t be subject to sexual violence regardless of what they’re wearing.

Participants hope to tackle the worrying environment of “victim-blaming” towards victims of sexual abuse.

The march was reportedly attended by hundreds of people, mostly women, with celebrities including Matt McGorry from Orange Is the New Black, Michelle Trachtenberg from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and MTV presenter Nick Cannon also joining.

Some attendees wore undergarments and wrote slogans on their skin while a few even went topless to make their statement.

SlutWalks started in 2011 after a comment reportedly made by a police officer in the wake of a number of sexual assaults on the campus of Canada’s York University caused outrage. According to local media reports, the officer said: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

Former stripper Rose has been extremely vocal about the cause in recent times, speaking out against the concept of “slut shaming”, or slamming a person for their sexual choices.

A statement on the Amber Rose SlutWalk website, reads:

We recognize that shaming, oppression, assault and violence have disproportionately impacted marginalized groups including women of color, transgender people and sex workers, and thus we are actively working to center these groups in this event. We deeply value the voices of marginalized groups and have a strong desire to find common ground among all of our intersections.

Earlier this year at the MTV Video Music Awards, Amber Rose appeared alongside her friend Blac Chyna, as the two wore outfits with derogatory terms used against women in an effort to reclaim words like “slut” and “hoe”.

More recently, she appeared in a Funny or Die video which made fun of the “walk of shame” after a one-night stand.

At Saturday’s event, Rose told the SlutWalk crowd about the first time she was “slut shamed” at 14. She then tearfully forgave Kanye West for saying he needed “30 showers” after being with her and ex-husband Wiz Khalifa for calling her nothing but a stripper, saying she wants “to let all of that negativity go”.

She added:

I decided to have this SlutWalk for women that have been through shit. And even though I’m up here crying, I want to be the strong person you guys can look up to.
