The inaugural ‘European Games’ is now underway in Baku, Azebaijian, but it didn’t start quite as smoothly as the organisers would have hoped, after a bus ran over a group of teenage athlete’s, leaving one in a coma.
The incident happened on Thursday, and the bus driver, Veli Ahmadov, has since been arrested, which is no great surprise when you see the video.
Three teenage Austrian athletes from the synchronised swimming team were injured by the coach, with one girl being left in a coma.
Vanessa Sahinovic suffered multiple fractures and spinal injuries, and was flown back to Austria and placed into an emergency coma.
The Austrian Olympic Committee released a statement saying:
The 15-year-old suffered multiple fractures and was flown to Vienna where she was operated on all night.
Apart from her hip region and thigh, her spine has also been affected.
Sahinovic is at the moment in an artificial deep sleep and will undergo more operations in the coming days.
Teammate Luna Pajer was also flown back to Vienna with a broken arm, while the third injured athlete was treated in Baku for her injuries and returned to the swimming team.
Here is the video, which makes for shocking viewing.
We wish the girls involved a speedy recovery.
