This morning the world was rocked by the passing of David Bowie, but it seems he had already bid his fans goodbye.

Three days prior to his death, Bowie released a video for new track Lazarus from his latest album, Blackstar, and the lyrics have a chilling poignancy.

The track opens with the 69-year-old lying blindly in a hospital bed before singing “Look up here, I’m in heaven”.

Bowie had kept his 18-month battle with cancer quiet from the public, but his producer has now revealed the star knew for a year that his illness was terminal.

According to the Daily Mail, Tony Visconti has suggested Blackstar was created knowing it would be goodbye.

He said:

He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art.

He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it.

Visconti, who produced the rock idol’s music as far back as the 60’s, added:

He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.

And cry many people probably have, and will continue to do so.

But, at least it’s clear that despite 25 albums in his career, fans know they were never forgotten about, and in turn Bowie too will always be remembered.
