Footage has been released that allegedly shows the dramatic moment Kurdish and American forces freed 70 ISIS hostages.
The video was released by the Kurdish military, and it shows the raid on an IS prison compound in Iraq. The operation was a joint mission between Peshmerga forces and US commandos.
Master Sgt Joshua Wheeler was killed on the mission, the first American to be killed in operations against the Islamic State, and the first to die in combat in Iraq since 2011, The Independent reports.
The footage couldn’t be initially verified, but ABC News quoted a senior military source as confirming its authenticity.
Defence Secretary Ash Carter told a news briefing Wheeler had rushed in to help troops when they were met with gunfire:
He ran to the sound of the guns and he stood up. All the indications are it was his actions and that of one of his teammates that protected those that were involved in breaching the compound and made the mission a success.
