Gosh darn that British wit. It has landed English actor Emily Blunt in hot water with the US media and a heap of US citizens.

Blunt has been forced to apologise after a throwaway remark regarding her newly acquired US citizenship.

The test she faced to become a passport carrying American was a grueling ten question examination, from which you must register six correct answers. Blunt passed with flying colours, going six from six to bring an early end to proceedings, before having to then officially renounce Queen and country.

Following the success the Five Year Engagement star tuned in to the Republican Presidential candidacy debate which included Donald Trump.

During an informal interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Toronto film festival she quipped:

I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘this was a terrible mistake. What have I done?”

Spearheaded by Fox News, many Americans did not like the comments. Not one bit.

Some went further than others in their fury.

‘Lucky she’s not speaking German’. And that kids is a prime example of how to take yourself too seriously.

Ignoring the fact it was obviously a joke, I seem to remember a certain document providing Americans with the right to free speech?

Well in a bid to appease those wanting to ‘punt Blunt’, Emily shared a few words on US TV explaining she meant no offense.

It really does spoil a joke when you have to explain it, but hopefully everyone can calm down a bit now.
