A 30-year-old former teacher has been charged with having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a female student.
Laura Garrigus, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, stands accused of having a physical relationship with a 17-year-old girl between October and December of last year.
The former science teacher, who resigned from her position in December, is charged with four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student and two counts of sexual offences.
However, based on early evidence, it is believed the relationship was consensual and the girl was of legal age.
Sgt. Sean Swain said:
I would say that based in the fact that from October to December that this happened, it went two months without being reported, they had known each other prior. I would (be) led to believe that it’s consensual.
That belief is unlikely to carry in Garrigus’ favour, as state law dictates that students and teachers may not engage in inappropriate relationships regardless of consent.
If the mother-of-three makes bail of $50,000 (roughly £34,500), the court has ruled that she may not have any contact with children under the age of 18, including her own.
She is next scheduled to appear in court in March.
