Warning: Distressing images

This upsetting footage shows the brutal treatment of young chickens during their very short lives.

Filmed undercover by Animal Equality, the animals are seen beheaded, crushed and killed for purely being born the wrong sex (as females are a lot more valuable because they can produce eggs) or simply not being good enough to be grown for meat.

The horrific clip shows the chicks being chucked onto conveyor belts and being stored in cupboards while they are still alive.

Workers handle them very roughly, without any regard for the welfare of the bird and don’t even bother separating dead ones.

Even when they throw away the shells and dead chicks, some that were still alive were being chucked in to the bin anyway and crushed along with the rest.

Some do last the whole gruelling journey, but simply die of exhaustion once they arrive at the industrial farms. If they do make it to this point they are then pumped full of growth hormones.

According to the animal rights group, the videos shows us ‘what the meat industry doesn’t want us to see’.

This particular footage was apparently shot in the U.S., but some of these barbaric practices are also used in the UK.

Animal treatment like this is simply unacceptable, especially in this day and age.

Those who farm chickens in this way need to be brought to task and banned from the profession and face criminal prosecution.
