It was a fight years in the making and when Kimbo Slice vs Ken Shamrock finally went down at Bellator 138 on Friday night, it delivered about as much as we could have hoped for.
Considering the advancing ages of both fighters (Slice is 41, Shamrock is 51) and the fact that ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Man’ hasn’t done much in the way of winning or even looking good in defeat in recent years, while Slice hasn’t competed in mixed martial arts for five years, we’ll take what we can get.
The main event between UFC pioneer Shamrock and street fighter turned MMA star Kimbo started out as many expected – Shamrock looked to exploit Slice’s lack of grappling experience. Shamrock got the takedown and looked to sink in a rear naked choke but, somehow, Kimbo was able to fight out of it.
Then, when the fight returned to the feet, Slice staggered Shamrock with an uppercut and followed up with a series of heavy punches. A straight right hand to Shamrock’s eye put him down and out to earn Slice the victory.
Whether this was an exciting bout delivering the goods after years of anticipation or simply a sad spectacle between two ageing fighters who had no business being in the cage together is for you to decide…
