In a move that has been long overdue from an American president, Barack Obama has promised to take action to tighten gun control.
Obama has promised a range of new measures to prevent weapons making their way into the hands of people ill-equipped to handle them responsibly.
The most dramatic change being that background checks will be conducted for online sales and at gun shows, as opposed to solely in stores as previous regulation set out.
The FBI will also increase its number of staff dedicated to undertaking background checks by 50 per cent, with 230 more examiners to be hired.
The president is anticipating a fight from congress over his plans, suggesting gun enthusiasts are pulling the chamber’s strings on the issue, but his response was defiant.
The gun lobby may be holding Congress hostage right now, but they cannot hold America hostage.”Advertisement
He also pointed out hypocrisies that need urgent address:
If we can set it up so you can’t unlock your phone unless you’ve got the right fingerprint, why can’t we do the same thing for our guns? If a child can’t open a bottle of aspirin, we should make sure they can’t pull a trigger on a gun.”
Check it out.
That almost endless list of tragedies involving guns perfectly demonstrated why action needs to be taken.
As Obama says, he has nothing to gain politically from pushing for these changes, he can’t be re-elected having already served two terms as president.
But as the 44th president conceded, these measures probably don’t go far enough. They are, however, a step towards keeping innocent people safe from guns, and that has to be supported.
