Footballers cop a fair bit of flack these days and at times, they deserve it, but Spartak Moscow players should take a bow after it emerged they saved a 102 year old man who had lost his life savings to robbers.

The players stepped in and donated $8,000 to Otto Fischer- and showed that there is some sentiment left in football after all.

Yes, they can obviously afford it, but that is not the point. The fact they did it at all speaks volumes about them and skipper Vyacheslav Krotov presented the fan with the cash following a whip round from the club.

Fischer claimed:

I am very glad to get this help. I bow my head to everyone who helped me in this situation. If I get another opportunity to see another game, I certainly will with great pleasure. We have a saying: ‘It is better to see something once than to hear about it one hundred times.

After being a fan of the club since his 20s, that must have been some experience indeed for him!
