I love stories like this. Science is amazing, and seeing people happy is contagious.
Allen Zderad started to develop eye problems twenty years ago, and he discovered that he had retinitis pigmentosa, which after a bit of Googling, I’ve learned is a chronic eye disease that degenerates the retina, causing severe impairment of vision and often leads to total blindness, and unfortunately, there is no known cure. Grim.
He has been blind for the last decade, but has just received a bionic eye. I didn’t even realise that these were a real thing. Amazing.
Doctors have put a chip behind Allen’s right eye, and it sends light directly into the optic nerve, with the rest of the glasses acting as his eye. It is’t perfect vision, but he can see outlines now, and when he looks at people, he will see a silhouette. But as you can see in the video, he is made up with the sight that he does have, because now he can see his wife again.
