There were unbelievable scenes at the Essex derby this weekend as one over-zealous Southend fan took things a little too far.

The unnamed fan obviously had so much confidence in his boxing skills that that he felt he could take on the entire 1,312 visiting Colchester faithful in the North Stand at Roots Hall.

In a moment of insane bravado/madness the man can be seen jumping the hoardings and sprinting towards the travelling Colchester supporters. He appeared to throw punches towards the rival fans before being hoisted away by stewards.

According to the Mirror police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and football banning orders could be dished out for those found guilty of offences during the match, which Southend won 3-0.

PC Niki Howard, who acts as a designated football officer with Colchester, released a statement on Twitter confirming the incident was under investigation:

A post match investigation will be launched following today’s events. Please contact @EssexPoliceUK on Tel101 to report offences.

Myself, @SUFCPolice (PC Keith Baker, dedicated football officer for Southend United) & @EssexPoliceUK cannot be held responsible for the unacceptable actions of a minority.

We will however do everything we can to identify those responsible and ensure they won’t cause problems at football again.

It’s a thin line between bravery and stupidity…
