April The Giraffe has kept the world waiting a long time – but the day is finally here.
April has become famous the world over after Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, started live blogging April’s pregnancy (presumably with permission from April, it’s kinda private).
The Animal Adventure Park’s Facebook page put up a live video of the birth that had over 200,000 people watching:
Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months, which is milking it a bit really, so we’ve been kept on the edge of our seats for much longer than humans are used to.
But finally after all that waiting some hooves started to protrude from April’s nethers.
And it’s worth the wait as April has a flair for the dramatic and decided to give birth on Easter Weekend – giving us all plenty of ammunition to speculate that her calf might in fact be the second coming of Christ.
While reading Wikipedia to try and work out why everyone is so obsessed with giraffe birth I uncovered this gem of a fact; “male giraffes assess female fertility by tasting the female’s urine, a process known as the flehmen response.”
It’s also known as watersports. Giraffes are into some shady stuff apparently.
