A three-month-old baby has died after being eaten alive by giant rats in Katlehong, Johannesburg.

The child was left unattended as her mother had gone out ‘partying’, reports the The New Age.

Angered neighbours have allegedly called for the mother to ‘rot in jail’ after the horrific scene was discovered. She has since been arrested for child neglect.

The girl had a twin brother, named Lucky, who avoided a similar fate after his mother had taken him with her during her ‘all-night drinking binge.’

A neighbour is quoted as saying:

The baby could only have died a painful death. The infant’s tongue, eyes and fingers had all been eaten.

Besides the missing body parts, the remains of her body had bites and wounds all over that were inflicted by the sharp teeth of the rats. This woman must rot in jail.

She does not deserve to be a mother.

Captain Mega Ndobe of Katlehong police said “I can confirm the little girl died after being eaten by rats. The mother has been arrested and is facing charges of child negligence and the case will be heard in court next year.”

The death was also verified by local journalsit Nondumiso Zwane of The New Age.

It was later argued by the daughter of the mother’s landlord, Noluthando Mtshali, that the mother attempted to say the infant girl had been burned.

She said:

She came back in the early hours of the morning with a new boyfriend and they tried to break into the shack since she had lost the key and they found the baby girl dead. They were claiming that the child was burnt.

The surviving twin Lucky is now in the care of his 28-year-old father and his girlfriend, who claimed the mother was regularly drunk.

She claimed:

The mother always comes here drunk and locks the infants inside alone.

When Lucky came to us he looked like he had not eaten for days but he is fine now.

Tragic.
