Red Dead Redemption 2 has proven itself to be a critical and commercial hit, and our antihero Arthur Morgan is sure to stand alongside some of gaming’s greatest icons going forward.
Unfortunately for some, the bad guys (well, worse guys) of Rockstar’s new game aren’t likely to be forgotten any time soon either. Colm O’Driscoll – the leader of rival gang The O’Driscolls – is a villainous, no good cretin.
That’s in Red Dead Redemption 2, anyway. In real life, Colm O’Driscoll seems like a nice bloke from Ireland who doesn’t actually own an Xbox One or PS4, but has found himself caught up in the hype for Rockstar’s Western epic all the same.
Eurogamer reports that poor Mr O’Driscoll has been the victim of gamers sending him “hate mail” via Twitter and Instagram. While some of these messages amount to nothing more than light hearted references to the game, some are actually alarmingly sinister.
Take a look at a Tweet from O’Driscoll himself below, but be aware of spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as some pretty offensive language.

O’Driscoll told Eurogamer he’s taking the messages in good spirit, but it is starting to wear thin:
I find the whole thing kinda funny, but the messages are starting to get annoying. A little part of me worries that some of these people are so emotionally invested in the game that they’re starting to lose perception of what’s real and what isn’t.
It’s certainly an unusual turn of events, especially for someone who doesn’t seem all that interested in video games and likely cares very little for a release like Red Dead Redemption 2.
While O’Driscoll has assumed the majority of messages are coming from harmless trolls, he has started blocking messages from strangers on Instagram, which is probably a smart move regardless of whether or not you share your name with a villain the year’s biggest AAA release.
However invested you are in Red Dead Redemption 2, maybe it’s time to leave the real Colm O’Driscolls of the world alone. Go and bother a Bill Williamson for a little bit instead*.
*Don’t actually do that.
