Alia Shawkat Reveals Brad Pitt’s Apology Over Dating Rumours
Alia Shawkat has said Brad Pitt had ‘no idea’ that the pair had been the subject of dating rumours, adding that she was left ‘shaken up’ by the paparazzi attention that followed the speculation.
The Arrested Development star was briefly linked to Pitt in 2019 following his split from Angelina Jolie, and while Shawkat has previously spoken out to confirm that the pair were not dating and were instead friends, Pitt has never commented on the rumours.
Now, in a new interview, Shawkat has revealed that Pitt was none the wiser as to speculation surrounding his love life, and felt it necessary to apologise to Shawkat when he learned she’d been followed by photographers after the pair were seen spending time together.
‘He had no awareness of it at all. Which is so funny. Because he doesn’t read that s**t,’ she told the New Yorker. ‘I was like, ‘You know everyone thinks we’re dating? And there’s this whole thing, and I’m being followed.’ And he was, like, ‘I’m sorry. It happens. If you hang out with me, it happens.’ He had no awareness of it at all.
‘It came in hot and left as fast as it came in… It was so weird. Now it’s like a weird dream, where I’m, like, Did that happen?’ Shawkat said of the experience, which she had to go through ‘alone’ during lockdown.
‘At the time, it was not fun at all. I’m not an actor who has ever dealt with the paparazzi. They don’t know who the f**k.’
The 32-year-old added that she found it ‘ironic and weird and gross’ that she received more attention for possibly dating Pitt than for her ’20-year career’ as an actor, saying, ‘It was super brief. And I was fine. I was shaken up by it…then they just disappeared, and now they don’t give a s**t.’
Shawkat, who is currently starring in Being The Riccardos, revealed that her grandmother had even kept a gossip magazine with pictures of herself and Pitt in it, saying, ‘I looked at my grandmother, like, ‘Why do you have this?’ She’s, like, ‘It’s you and this movie star! And it’s your face.’ I was embarrassed by it. I told her she had to throw it away. And she laughed.’
