Jim Carrey Says People Are Shocked When He Transforms His Face Into The Grinch

Jim Carrey has revealed the surprised reactions he receives when people realise how the Grinch's iconic smirk was created.

Jim Carrey has revealed the surprised reactions he receives when people realise how the Grinch's iconic smirk was created.

It may not be the role he said yes to the quickest, but it is one that has infiltrated the nightmares of children, taken over television screens year after year at Christmas, and is one of Carrey's most impressive performances to date.

In an interview for his upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey couldn't help but reflect on the character he played who nearly stole Christmas.

The actor opened up about the disbelief he is often met with when fans of the film realise exactly how he played the green, hairy character.

Carrey told Rotten Tomatoes how 'fun' it is to have kids dress up as characters he has played, such as the Grinch.

He reflected: "Or they come up to me in the street, and you know, their parent says, 'You know who that is? That's the Grinch,' and I go..."

Contorting his face into the iconic Grinch grin, Carrey quotes the line: "I must find a way to stop Christmas from coming."

"You know, and their parents go, 'Oh, I thought it was makeup.' So it's so fun. It's so gratifying," he explained.

The clip of Carrey showcasing his Grinch grin has since gone viral, with many Twitter users admitting that they too hadn't realised the Grinch's iconic expression was not a result of clever makeup but Carrey's own clever contorting.

One said: "I saw Jim Carrey trending and how tf can we sleep on the fact this man played the GRINCH and the expressions he made were his ACTUAL FACE."

"I came across Jim Carrey making the Grinch face during an interview... I always thought it was a mask," another wrote.

A third commented: "Therapist: You need to stop fixating. It’s just makeup! Grinch-face Jim Carrey can’t hurt you, he isn’t real. Grinch-face Jim Carrey:"

Carrey also spoke about how 'gratified' he feels when people tell him they've dressed up as his past characters for Halloween.

"Honestly, I'm so gratified by that kind of stuff. Like, I have people coming up to me going, 'I just literally was the mask on Halloween,' or new filmmakers that have just broken through that are going, 'I started because of Dumb and Dumber', or whatever."

He concluded: "If I get lucky, if people like it and their kids like it, then you know I get to see it next Halloween."
